Journalist: When was Green Ray founded?

Fernando Cancela: Green Ray was founded two years ago because of a study that marked a radical change in LED technology that showed that the new technology could replace existing lighting technologies on a one to one basis.  That was the breakout point when LED technology became a real player in the world lighting market.

J: What do you mean by saying “on a one to one basis?”

FC: On a one to one basis means that the performance of the LED technology allows you to change your existing lighting tubes for LED tubes while maintaining the same quantity and quality of light.

J: And that point was reached two years ago?

FC: Two years ago is when the lumens per watt exceeded 80 units.

P: What opportunities does the lighting market offer then?

FC: The lighting market is a little bit like the ideal market because if you consider that 100% of businesses, industries, and households use your product then you find yourself involved in a technological change on worldwide and massive scale.  Therefore, in the search for a solution to replace two obsolete technologies, like the fluorescent and incandescent technologies, and to have a product that not only saves a lot but also has a better quality of light, is a fundamental tool for leading this change in technology.

J: Let’s go little by little.  Before getting into the project that was presented yesterday here in Montevideo, before even digging into the advantages of LED technology, maybe the first thing would be to explain what it’s all about, right?  This type of lighting is usually considered ecological because of its low consumption of energy as compared to traditional technology, really low consumption, 80% less, Right? Furthermore, LEDs stand out because of their long life, we’re talking about 50,000 hours here, but “what is it? What is LED technology?

FC: To define it plain and simple, an LED is a rock, similar to silicon, that glows when a certain voltage is applied to it.  You can make the rock glow in different colors.  This technology became the predominate player in the technological change in lighting in 1993 when Doctor Nakamura managed to take the blue light, apply a phosphorous bath to it and convert it into a full spectrum white light.

J: Then, we are talking about rocks?

FC: It’s a rock.  That’s why it produces better light; it is a light in a solid state.  It’s a light that doesn’t use filaments or gas excitation; it’s a light that allows for permanent uniformity over a long period of time.

J: I think that those who have had some contact with LED technology, above all, those who have seen it and have later on used it but haven’t yet internalized what it really is, identify LED technology with a group of little dots of light, right? What is all that about?

FC: Of course. Each rock has to be put in a glass and be given a phosphorous bath.  Therefore, each yellow dot that you see is rock that has been bathed in phosphorous.  This obtains what we call a Ray of lights, the combination of various LEDs. LED stands for Light Emitting Diode.  For example, our 120 tube has 288 LEDs, therefore, in this way we create an even light, a continuous light, and we regulate the heat.  Afterwards we’ll talk about heat and how it is one of the major problems that affect LEDs.

J: Ok let’s talk with Andres and get into the advantages of LED technology, we have already mentioned some but it’s worth going further into.   For example, you say “ok,” it’s efficient, much more efficient in terms of energy, it doesn’t need to be made of glass, it’s recyclable.  These are some of the benefits.  What other advantages are there?
FC: I would say that the number one advantage is that it’s the best lighting available today.  The light, for example, that is shining on us right now is a light that flickers, a light that emits ultraviolet rays, a light that, if one of these tubes broke it would have enough mercury to contaminate 20,000 gallons of water.  The first thing we should attack is the quality.  We replace obsolete technology.  Incandescent technology has been around for more than 100 years, fluorescent technology for 60 years and they both have reached a plateau in their performance where they can’t improve more than in small percentages.  On the other hand the performance of LED technology has been increasing by 30% every 6 months.

Periodista: ¿Cuando nació Green Ray?

Fernando Cancela: Green Ray nace hace dos años de acuerdo a un estudio que marcaba un cambio radical cuando la tecnología LED podía cambiar uno a uno las tecnologías de iluminación existentes.  Ese fue el punto de quiebre donde comenzó a ser un jugador real dentro de lo que es la iluminación mundial.

P: ¿Que quiere decir uno a uno?

FC: Uno a uno es que la performance de la tecnología LED permite que hoy, si usted tiene un tubo lo cambie por un tubo LED y obtenga la misma cantidad y calidad de iluminación.

P: ¿Ya ese punto se llegó hace dos años?

FC: A ese punto se llegó hace dos anos donde los lumens por watt
superaron los 80 de unidad.

P: ¿Cuales son las oportunidades que ofrece el mercado de la iluminación entonces?

FC: El mercado de la iluminación es un poco el mercado perfecto porque si usted considera que el 100% de lo que es el comercio, la industria, la residencia utiliza su producto usted está en un cambio tecnológico a nivel global y masivo.  Entonces, la búsqueda de una solución para cambiar dos tecnologías que ya son obsoletas como la fluorescente o la incandescente y tener un producto que no solamente ahorra mucho mas sino que la calidad de luz es mucho mejor es un arma fundamental para liderar ese recambio tecnológico.

P: Vamos de a poco.  Antes de meternos en el proyecto que se presentó ayer aquí en Montevideo, antes incluso de profundizar en las ventajas de la tecnología LED quizás lo primero sea explicar de qué se trata, ¿no? La iluminación con esta tecnología suele llamarse ecológica por el bajo consumo con respecto a la tecnología tradicional, muy bajo consumo, 80% menos ¿no?  Además, los LED se destacan por su larga vida útil, estamos hablando de 50000 horas, pero ¿qué es?  Que es la tecnología LED?

FC: Para definirlo de una manera simple y clara, El LED es una roca de un mineral parecido al silicio el cual cuando uno le aplica un voltaje determinado, brilla.  ¿Verdad?  Usted puede hacer brillar la roca de diferentes colores.  Cuando esta tecnología pasa a ser jugador predominante del cambio tecnológico es cuando en el año 93 el doctor Nakamura consigue tomar la luz azul, aplicarle un baño de fosforo y convertir esa luz azul en una luz blanca de espectro completo.

P: Entonces, ¿estamos hablando de piedras?

FC: Es una piedra.  Por eso es mejor luz, es una luz de estado sólido.  Es una luz que no usa filamentos  que no usa excitación de
gases, es una luz que permite tener una uniformidad permanente durante mucho tiempo.

P: Yo creo que aquellos que han tenido algún contacto con la tecnología LED,  sobre todo los que la han visto eventualmente la han usado pero que no se han interiorizado demasiado identifican la tecnología de LED con un conjunto de puntitos de luz, ¿no?  ¿Cómo es eso entonces?

FC: Claro, cada roca se debe poner en una copa y aplicarle ese baño de fosforo.  Entonces cada puntito amarillo que uno ve es la roca adentro bañada en fosforo, verdad.  Eso logra que, lo que nosotros llamamos una ray de luces, la combinación de varios LED, LED quiere decir en español diodo emisor de luz, por ejemplo en nuestro tubo de 120 colocamos 288 LEDs, entonces de esa manera logramos una luz uniforme, una luz continua, y gerenciamos el calor que después vamos a hablar que es uno de los mayores problemas que afecta al LED.

P: Bueno vamos con Andrés ahora y nos metemos en las ventajas, ya algo mencionamos pero vale la pena ir a fondo en esto.   Por ejemplo usted dice bueno, es eficiente, mucho más eficiente en materia de energía, no requiere de vidrio, es reciclable son algunos de los aspectos que se manejan.  ¿Qué otras ventajas tiene?

FC: La venta que yo diría como número uno es que es una mejor iluminación a lo que hoy existe.   La luz que, por ejemplo, nos está iluminado en este momento es una luz que titila, verdad, es una luz que tiene rayos ultravioletas, es una luz que si uno de estos tubos se quebrara tendría suficiente mercurio como para contaminar 20,000 galones de agua.  Lo primero que deberíamos atacar es la calidad.  Nosotros cambiamos una tecnología obsoleta, la incandescente tiene más de 100 anos, la fluorescente tiene 60 anos, llegaron a un plateau de performance donde no pueden mejorar más que pequeños porcentajes.  Mientras que el LED viene creciendo casi un 30% en mejora de performance cada seis meses.

P: Usted está comparando con la iluminación incandescente, vamos a pasarlo limpio, es la de las bombitas convencionales, ¿no?

FC: Si, las bombitas convencionales.

P: ¿Las que tiene el filamento?

FC: Exactamente.

P: Pero también la está comparando con la tecnología fluorescente.

FC: El tubo Lux.

P: ¿Y que otros ejemplos?

FC: El dulux como tenemos acá.  La nueva tecnología PL, el bajo consumo como se llama, o CFL, esa bombita que parece un helado, ese es el tipo de bombita que es tecnología fluorescente.

P: Entonces, usted está destacando que el LED nada más que en el rubro consumo, si nos detenemos en ese rubro, tiene ventaja con respecto a las otras dos, ¿de que orden?  A ver, como podemos comparar los números.

FC: Es muy simple.  Si ustedes tocan una bombita de luz, la bombita común, se queman la mano.  ¿Por qué?  Porque es 90% calor y 10% luz.  El LED, si usted cambia la bombita, va a pasar a consumir el 90% luz y 10% calor.  Con la tecnología fluorescente es lo mismo, cambian las performances de acuerdo a los tipos de tecnología, entonces usted puede tener un ahorro de un 60 a un 80%.

P: Un ahorro de un 60 a un 80% de ahorro comparando con esas dos tecnologías anteriores.

FC: Solo con la fluorescente, con la incandescente 90%.  Le doy un ejemplo.

P: A ver, lo mejor es pasar a un número concreto.

FC: Si usted tiene una lámpara de 60 watts la cambia por una lamparita de LED de 7 watts y va a tener mejor luz, y la lámpara va a durar 41 veces lo que le dura la común y va a consumir solo un 10% de lo que consume hoy.

Green Ray, a U.S. company that manufactures commercial lighting solutions with LED technology on a worldwide scale, will inaugurate today in Montevideo its new factory, whose ultimate goal will be to supply the demand of its Mercosur clients.

The company, directed by Fernando Cancela, an Uruguayan who emigrated 10 ago to the United States, has already invested $750,000 in the installation of their store, office construction, and in equipment.
That amount will rise to $2 million when the third phase culminates, Ferando Cancela tells El Pais.

“Although the principle markets aren’t in Uruguay, the country was seen as an anchor because of its economic soundness and politics that guarantee investments,” says Cancela.

The first phase consisted of bringing the product to Uruguay to find out if a market existed. Because of the successful culmination of this phase, it is expected that the factory will start continuous production on a local level in 30 days that will produce 26,000 units per month.

During this phase the process will be realized with local, regional and international providers and during a third phase, that is expected to start in April or May, the products will be considered Uruguayan. With this in mind, Green Ray has already presented a project to the National Investigation and Innovation Agency for the development of the necessary technology.

Green Ray has a presence in various countries in the region. Among its principal Argentine clients are 16 Carrefour supermarkets (similar to Walmart), McDonalds, and Telefonica. Uruguay will be the hub of distribution for Mercosur, but the company also has other hubs in Chile, Mexico, the United States and China. Customer support and technical consultation are available at all locations.

That’s why, in Montevideo, besides the factory, Green Ray installed offices and a technical laboratory for training architects, designers, and engineers about the advantages of LED technology (efficiency,performance, and low consumption compared to incandescent and fluorescent lighting).
